Preparations from 100 human cadavers, primarily middle-aged and older males, were studied. The accessory nerve left and cranial cavity via the posteromedial portion of the anterior part of the jugular canal. Within the jugular canal, the nerve was in the majority of cases (94.5%) separated from the internal jugular vein by a membranous plate having a bony structure in only 5.5% of the cases. Four variants of the joining of the internal branch of the accessory nerve to the vagal nerve, and 2 variants of the path of the external branch of the accessory nerve relative to the internal jugular vein were noted.
