An outbreak of coxsackie B6 infection in Pondicherry, South India

From Oct. 1974 to March 1975, 27 of 93 virologically investigated cases were associated with Coxsackievirus type B6 infection. The virus was isolated from 25 cases. Among 16 cases with CNS involvement, B6 was isolated from CSF in 14 cases and from throat swabs in the other 2 cases. In 2 cases of myocarditis the virus was isolated and a significant serological rise in neutralizing antibody titer was observed in one of them. In 7 cases of respiratory tract infection, B6 was isolated from throat swabs. Serological evidence, as shown by .gtoreq. 4-fold rise in neutralizing antibody against the virus, was found in 1 case of meningitis and another of myocarditis. For primary isolation of Coxsackie B6 virus, primary MKEC Vero cell lines, while HeLa cells are superior to the Vero cell line.
