The recirculating loop is a possible method for increasing the efficiency of residual small-bowel segments following massive intestinal resection. To test this hypothesis massive small-bowel resection was performed in pure-bred beagles. The results and conclusions of the experiment were discussed. The success of the operation appears to be total parenteral nutrition in the dog or patient during the critical period of gut adaptation.
