When the body surface of fattening pigs weighing 78-80 kg was thoroughly moistened it took 50-60, 60-90 and 120-150 minutes in metabolic cages kept at 33, 27 and 22 deg C respectively and 60% r.h. Pre-moistening heat production was lowest at 22 deg C. At 33 deg and 27 deg , wetting the body surface resulted in a reduction in heat production, respiration rate and rectal and cutaneous temperatures. Surplus heat production was reduced by 74 and 85% respectively at 33 deg and 27 deg by a single wetting but was increased slightly at 22 deg C. Temperature sensation of pigs with a wet body surface seemed to depend chiefly on the wet-bulb temperature.
