Influence of Leishmania brasiliensis on transplantable murine leukemia

Injection of a cultured non-pathogenic Leishmania brasiliensis in mice exerted a bimodal action on the growth of 6C3HED lymphoma (ascitic and solid form) and C1498 myeloid leukemia (solid form) tumours, when injected simultaneously with or after tumour implantation. Enhancement of ascites 6CsHED tumour growth occurred when the parasite was administered before tumour implantation. Enhancement of C1498 growth was seen with smaller numbers of injected parasites than those causing a certain inhibition of tumour growth. These results might be explained by assuming action of macrophages, presence of cross-reacting antigens, and/or an immunosuppression state induced by the parasite. [AS].
