Treatment of hyperemesis gravidarum with ACTH

Twenty patients with severe hyperemesis gravidariun were -treated with ACTH in the hospital. Twenty units of Cibacthen gel daily injected intramuscularly abolished nausea and vomiting without any detrimental effects in all these patients. Recurrent cases (two cases) were cured. permanently with the retreatinent of ACTH given ambulatorily. On the basis of the effectiveness of the treatment with AC'1'1-I, the hypothesis has been put forward that hypopituitarism is present in hyperemesis gravidarum, secondarily being due to such a temporary change in production of substances of steroid structure as is capable of inhibiting a release of ACTII.
