Eleven patients with cholelithiasis were studied for up to 15 days after cholecystectomy with insertion of a T-tube for free bile drainage. Six patients were given on the mornings before and after the tube was clamped on day 10 or 11 a liquid test meal of Casilan 0.5, glucose 0.5, maize oil 0.5 g and water 5 ml/kg bodyweight with 10 000 IU retinyl palmitate and 15 mg alpha -tocopherol acetate/100 ml maize oil. Before the tube was clamped the test meal produced no significant rise by 5 h in mean serum vitamins A and E, turbidity or triglyceride but after clamping and the same meal all these values rose. When 3 patients were given 0.5 g alpha -tocopherol acetate for 4 days before and 4 days after clamping serum vitamin E did not rise before but did after. On a diet with 60 g fat mean fat in faeces of all patients was 13.6 g/24 h before clamping and 6.3 g/24 h after.
