The metabolism of Complement 3 (C3) was studied by injection of C3 prepared from other rats. During infection with Babesia rodhaini the half life of C3 fell rapidly and so did its serum levels. The rate of catabolism was sharply increased and the rate of synthesis was sharply decreased. The catabolic rate of IgG remained unchanged. Apparently the changes in C3 are not due to abnormal filtration through the glomeruli or to increased vaso-permeability. Babesial infection in rats provides a convenient model for the study of the metabolism of C3.
