This is a review of malaria treatment and prophylaxis. Chloroquine and amodiaquine are the most reliable compounds for treatment except in south-east Asia and parts of South and Central America where Plasmodium falciparum may be less responsive than usual. For prophylaxis, proguanil or pyrimethamine may be used with or without sulphonamides but they can produce drug resistance. Chloroquine and amodiaquine are valuable except where chloroquine resistance is present.
