Ultrasound is rapidly replacing other methods in the evaluation of i.p. fluid collections in humans. The established ability of ultrasound to readily detect fluid and differentiate it from solid makes it an ideal diagnostic examination. Ultrasound can differentiate between free and loculated fluid. Differentiation of loculated fluid from normal fluid-containing structures, such as the gallbladder or urinary bladder from a cystic mass such as an ovarian cyst, is usually possible from their characteristic shape and position. The technique for ultrasonic examination is discussed.
