Isolations of Salmonella from unusual sites in 46 patients during a 12 yr period are reported. Besides isolation from 8 patients with meningitis, Salmonella were isolated from 3 cases each of osteomyelitis and arthritis, 6 of cholecystitis (4 of whom had cholelithiasis as well), 3 each of puerperal sepsis and pulmonary infections, 2 of pancreatitis and 18 other miscellaneous infections. S. typhi, phage type A, the most frequently isolated Salmonella serotype in the area, predominated in uncommon infections. S. typhimurium followed by S. paratyphi A were next most common. Etiologic diagnosis and appropriate chemotherapy with surgical intervention where needed usually resulted in prompt cure. Every attempt should be made to undertake bacteriological study of undiagnosed, unusal infections to uncover infection with these organisms.
