Use of the plastic linear mark method showed that the lateral body wall mesenchyme shifted to the base of the limb buds of the proximal and the distal limbs. The shifts took place chiefly in the postaxial part of the limb buds. No shift of material from the segments or the somite plate to the limb bud blastemas was demonstrated. Regarding the source of the material, the limb bud blastema is regarded as a heterogeneous system. One of its components came from the lateral body wall and originated from primitive streak and end bud material, while the other proliferated in the subectodermal zone of the apical part of the limb bud. During ontogeny, the 2 components link up with each other in the time and proximodistal axis of the limb, like the archepodium and neopodium of quadrupeds during phylogenetic development.
