In experiments on 84 albino rats thermoregulation of control, hyper- and hypo-thyroid animals was studied as affected by catecholamines and reserpine. The hyperthyroid rats had the highest level of cold resistance, the control and hypothyroid ones had the least level. Cold exposure was accompanied by a respiratory coefficient decrease in animals of all groups with the exception of the hypothyroid ones. Triiodothyronine is able to intensify the calorigenic action of catecholamines. Thyroid hormone had this property even when it was injected in relatively low doses. The injection of reserpine relaxing the sympathic effect resulted in a decrease in thermoregulatory abilities. The thyroid and adrenal medulla hormones are important in thermoregulation. To maintain temperature homeostasis under cold exposure, both hormonal systems should be intact.
